Rhode%20Island high school sports have a long and storied history, with many notable athletes and teams hailing from the state. In recent years, Rhode Island high school sports have been dominated by strong programs in football, basketball, and track and field. One of the most famous Rhode Island high school sports players is NBA star Lamar Odom, who was born in South Kingston and attended high school at Redemption Christian Academy in Troy, New York. Odom was a highly decorated player in high school, winning the New York state championship twice and earning a number of accolades, including New York Mr. Basketball. Another notable Rhode Island high school sports player is track and field athlete and Olympian Shane Victorino, who was born in Wailuku, Hawaii but attended St. Anthony’s High School in South Huntington, New York. Victorino was a standout in both track and field and baseball in high school, and went on to compete in the 2004 Summer Olympics. In football, the Bishop Hendricken Hawks have been dominant in recent years, winning the Division I state championship in 2018 and 2019.
